Cats are awesome. There are a ton of cat breeds out there - and many of them have crazy, interesting histories. I love all animals, but I’ll admit that I can’t resist the charm of an orange tabby.
You can choose a breed that matches your personality, or you can adopt a cat that needs a home. No matter what you choose, you will never regret owning a cat.

You’ve probably heard of some of the most common cat breeds - there are some more special than others. I’m especially fascinated with the Japanese Bobtail cat, but if you’re into the breed, there are so many to choose from! There are tons of neat cat breeds out there - I just thought I’d give you a quick rundown of some of the more popular breeds of cats.

Maine Coon cat:
The rarest breed in the world is the Maine Coon. As of this year, there are only an estimated 50 Maine Coons worldwide! What’s the difference between a cat and a Maine Coon?
They have similar characteristics, and there are numerous rare Maine Coons in the world that have white tabbies, including Trissi, Tre (aka Wicked Toupee), and Majik. Of course, if you own a cat like that, you’re in for the adventure of a lifetime.

Persian cat:
The Persian most common breed of cat was a long-haired breed originally developed as a hunting cat. Now, they’re usually referred to as "Persian," which is sometimes shortened to just "Persian."
The Persian is probably one of the more recognized breeds. It’s the most popular breed in America - and it’s even popular overseas. Whether you’re shopping for a first cat, a rescue, or even just your first pet, there are tons of Persian cat breeds to choose from.
What makes a Persian breed unique is the mix of markings in its fur. They can come in all kinds of different colors, including chocolate, dark brown, silver, black, blue, cream, and white. Bengal cat:
Bengal cats are a most common smart, active breed known for their vibrantly patterned coats. They are affectionate and gentle pets that are descended from domestic cats and wild Asian leopard cats.
History:
Although domestic cats and Asian leopard cats were crossed as early as the 1800s, the breed didn't take off until the mid-twentieth century. According to the Cat Fanciers' Association, Jean Mill, a breeder, and conservationist crossed a domestic cat with an Asian leopard cat for the first time in 1963.
Bengals were registered with the CFA by 1996. The animals that are accepted are from the F6 generation or higher.
Of course, with their warm, intelligent personalities and eye-popping coat colors and patterns, it's no surprise that they've quickly surpassed cats that have been around for generations as one of the most popular breeds in the world.
Health:
Bengal cats live for 9–15 years on average and are a relatively healthy breed. However, like all cats, they have a few health issues that you should be aware of before purchasing a new pet. The majority of serious breeders take great care to ensure that their animals are free of genetic health issues, but three of the most common ailments among Bengals are:

British shorthair:
The Romans are thought to have brought British shorthair cats to Britain, making them one of the most common oldest recognized cat breeds. British shorthairs are prized for their soft, plush coats and rounded bodies, and could almost be mistaken for living teddy bears.
The traditional British shorthair is wrapped in blue fur, but this lovely breed comes in a variety of colors and patterns. The best part is that this medium-to-large cat has very few health issues.
History:
According to The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy, British shorthairs are believed to be direct descendants of the cats brought to England by the invading Romans. They were used to control vermin and quickly spread as street and farm cats across the country.
People soon welcomed them into their homes because of their calm and confident demeanors (and onto their laps). They developed round faces with short, thick coats of all colors over time, according to The Cat Fanciers' Association.
Health:
British shorthairs are a large, healthy breed with a 20-year lifespan. They are, however, susceptible to certain health issues, as are all breeds.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the muscular walls of the cat's heart, can cause difficulty breathing, lethargy, and loss of appetite in older cats. British shorthairs, like other breeds, can develop urinary tract and kidney problems.
